Golden Triangle Auduon Bird Alert Update - April 7, 2010

There was a reasonably good variety of migrant species in Sabine Woods late in the afternoon today (Wed, April 7) but none in any numbers. Noteworthy were two male Prairie Warblers (one well marked male and one not so well marked) and two Black-throated Green Warblers.  Other migrant species included Black-and-white, Northern Parula, Worm-eating, Prothonotary, Louisiana Waterthrush, Yellow-throated, Tennessee, Kentucky and Hooded.  Including the wintering species, a total of 15 warbler species was reported.  Most apparently arrived or consolidated in the woods late in the afternoon. Other migrants were few, but included one Summer Tanager, one Scarlet Tanager, two Yellow-throated Vireos, a number of Eastern Kingbirds and Orchard Orioles and one Yellow-billed Cuckoo.

The front is still on track to clear the coast later tonight and continue on, reaching the Yucatan coast tomorrow night or Friday.  The surface wind forecast for Merida still has generally north east winds prevailing in the nighttime hours through at least Tuesday.  The current computer models now show the next front approaching the upper Texas coast late on Tuesday, but the most reliable long range model shows it dissipating without actually reaching the coast or causing a wind-shift.

With thanks to John Haynes for his report and for relaying reports from Terry Ferguson and Gerald Duhon.
