Golden Triangle Audubon Bird Alert Update -- April 29, 2010

Almost all birds in Sabine Woods yesterday were gone by this morning (April 29) and there were only a smattering of arrivals in the afternoon.  Only ten warbler species were recorded, none in any numbers.  A few Tanagers and Grosbeaks arrived, along with six of seven Yellow-billed Cuckoos.  Quite the slowest day in a long while.

The winds over the Gulf at the surface and 3000 feet and forecast to be southerly and southeasterly, 20 kt over the central Gulf, nearer 30 kt closer to the Lower and Central Texas Coasts.  There would be nothing to stop migrants from leaving the Yucatan Peninsula or from leaving the Texas coastal locations this evening.  There continues to be much disturbed weather over Nicaragua, Honduras, and Costa Rica.  A slow moving front is forecast to be over the Texas coast on Sunday, but since it should be slow moving, determination of the lkely time it clears the coast will have to wait until tomorrow or Saturday.

With thanks for reports from Steve Dillinger.
