Golden Triangle Audubon Bird Alert -- January 24, 2011
This Bird Alert is in a slightly different format. There are a number of wintering hummingbirds in the area, so we have posted an article on them by Jana Whittle that will appear in the February Brown Pelican. It can be found at

A Field Trip to Anahuac NWR on January 22 found lots of good birds and birding. While this is a little outside the area we normally cover, two of our local waterfowl birding sites (Cattail Marsh and the South Impoundment of Pleasure Island) are still under reconstruction and Anahuac is the nearest readily accessible alternative. Steve Mayes' report, which will also appear in the February Brown Pelican has also been posted on the web site at

A visit to West Jefferson County on January 23 found lots of raptors, especially Red-tailed Hawks, a relatively few ducks, but no large concentrations of geese. A flock of Long-billed Curlews was working the short grass fields east of FM1406 south of Willis Road. A flock of about 240 Sandhill Cranes was east of Johnson Road near FM365. An adult Bald Eagle was seen over Highway 73 near the Veolia plant.
