Bird Alert - September 4, 2007
Fourteen species of warbler were reliably reported at Sabine Woods and the Willows at Sea Rim over the three days of the Labor Day weekend – Canada, Mourning, Black-and-white, Yellow, Northern Waterthrush, Northern Parula, Common Yellowthroat, Worm-eating, Prothonotary, Yellow-breasted Chat, Prairie and Kentucky Warbler. There were also both Red-eyed and Warbling Vireos, Baltimore Orioles and Summer Tanagers. Empidonax flycatchers were quite common, many defying identification to species level. Eastern Wood-pewees were present, and one Olive-sided Flycatcher was seen at the Willows on September 3.
Shorebird migration could be seen in Cattail Marsh, where the cell just inside the gate (cell 2) was shallow enough to be attractive to them. Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Stilt Sandpipers, Long-billed Dowitchers, Western, Semi-palmated and Least Sandpipers, and a good number of Wilson's Phalaropes were all present, as were a few American Avocets. Black Terns were seen in large numbers. There are large numbers of Black-necked Stilts. Blue-winged Teal, in eclipse plumage, are there in considerable number. Cliff, Bank, Northern Rough-winged and Tree Swallows were all seen on September 3 along with a few Barn Swallows.
